Hashimoto’s Diet: Reversing Hypothyroid Autoimmune Disease through Nutrition

The Hashimoto’s diet is one one of the most discussed topics in the treatment of Hashimoto´s thyroiditis amongst patients seeking treatment for Autoimmune related Hypothyroid disease. And it makes sense – there is no activity that has a deeper impact on our physiology then our daily nutritional intake.

Lazy doctors, short appointments and finding my way to the Hashimoto’s Diet

A big part of treating Hashimoto’s with a Functional Medicine approach is a highly personalized nutritional approach that will deliver nutrient dense, delicious and satisfying low inflammatory meals on a daily level.

Personally I have greatly benefitted from the hashimoto’s diet. It´s a nutritional approach that is based on the latest findings in functional medicine treatment and nutritional science that is focused on treatment for autoimmune related conditons.

After my diagnosis of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis in 2012 I was surprised when my doctor could not really give me any lifestyle related interventions.

He just informed me that it is enough to follow my prescribed treatment of thyroid hormone replacement therapy. I was not very satisfied with this answer. To me this sounded like advice from a lazy doctor.

The whole follow up visit outlining the treatment plan fro my condition lasted 5 minutes. Do you think that is enough to to identify root causes of a complicated autoimmune condition? I don’t think so… So I started to investigate myself.

When I started to do my own research I discovered many success stories of patients that experienced a dramatic improvement of symptoms after following the Hashimoto’s diet.

I developed a keen interest to succeed at stopping the advancement of the destruction of my thyroid gland and improving my overall metabolic function via tweaking my diet.

Treating Hashimoto’s disease with a therapeutic Hashimoto´s diet

I discovered a lot of material in the functional medicine circles of various doctors that outlined a clear course of action of implementing a therapeutic Hashimoto’s diet.

What motivated me to investigate were countless stories of patients that had success. This anecdotal evidence was a stark contradiction to what I heard from my endocrinologist at that time.

In the end I knew that only trial and error and my experience could be my guide. My doctor did not suffer from this condition so he had no real life experience in this matter.

The benefits of following the Hashimoto’s diet:

  • It can help you to overcome depression, fatigue and inflammation
  • It can heal leaky gut in a gradual way
  • It will lower inflammation in your whole body
  • Dr. Datis Kharrazian recommends it to all his Hashimoto´s patients

The huge body of work created by Dr. Datis Kharrazian was instrumental to give me clear direction and focus.

Dr. Kharrazian is a functional medicine doctor from California that created some of the most authorative scientific publications in the area of autoimmune related hypothyroid treatment.

When I started to implement the Autoimmune Paleo Protocol which he generously outlined for Hashimoto’s patietents around the whole world on his website I started to imidiate witness improvements.

Especially a 5 day fasting program on maple water made it very clear how much my symptoms improved through giving my digestive system a rest to regenerate and heal.

The connection between Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis and Leaky Gut

According to Dr. Kharrazian there is a strong connection between a condition called leaky gut and autoimmune thyroid disease. In his books he cites ample scientific research articles to proof his methods.

The work of Dr. Fasano related to the gut, immunity and nutrition has contributed on a global scale that many patients suffering from autoimmune disease are implementing now with confidence gut healing protocols to improve their overall health.

I can say with confidence and conviction that leaky gut is the lynchpin in the fight against autoimmunity and Autoimmune throid disease.

I can only encourage any patient suffering from Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis to investigate this matter deeply. Through doing your own research, studies and diagnostic tests it will make sense to you.
